How It Works

Amalgam Separation

Quite simply, an amalgam separator is a mercury collection device that sits ‘inline’ between the operatory and vacuum pump—typically in the equipment room. Dental waste water flows through the vacuum line and passes through the amalgam separator where teeth fragments, dental amalgam and mercury are separated and collected. The filtered water continues to flow through while heavy waste and sediment is stored. When the container reaches the full line or 12 months (whichever comes first), we ship you a new container and you ship the full one for proper recycling. Plain and simple.

According to the EPA, dental practices discharge 3.7 tons of mercury to Publicly-Owned Treatment Works facilities each year and dental practices are the number one contributor, which can ultimately contaminate the water supply. As of July 14, 2017, a federal mandate was passed that requires certain dental offices to install an ISO 11143 certified amalgam separator to remove mercury from the waste water.

High levels of mercury in humans have been linked to diseases and ailments such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, hearing loss, chronic fatigue, reproductive issues and additional mercury-related diseases.

Recycling Program

What really makes our NXT Hg5 series the best amalgam separator in the industry is our simple and comprehensive recycling program. Once you’re set up with one of our award-winning Hg5 systems, we take care of everything to keep you in compliance and give you peace of mind. We send reminders to check your container by email or mail and then when you’re ready to change out your container, you simply order through your dental dealer. We send you a new container and everything you need to ship the full container to the recyclers (box, instructions and shipping label). And then once the full container is received, the waste is recycled under federal guidelines and a certificate of compliance is available on our website. It’s that easy!

Solmetex now offers a complimentary autoship program, the Solmetex Compliance Program. You designate the frequency, we ship you a collection container on your schedule. Participation in program is FREE and may be modified or canceled at anytime. Click Here to Enroll or call 1-800-216-5505.
