If your dental practice has an amalgam separator installed before June 14, 2017, there is an important compliance requirement ahead: the system must be replaced by June 14, 2027, regardless of system performance or service history.
Because this is a one-time requirement—and not part of routine maintenance—many practices aren’t aware it’s coming. At the same time, inspectors have already begun flagging older systems in anticipation of the deadline.
We’re sharing this now so you have the information you need early, with time to plan and avoid unnecessary disruption.
What the EPA Requires (In Plain Terms)
Here’s what matters most:
- Any amalgam separator installed before June 14, 2017 must be replaced
- The compliance deadline is June 14, 2027
- This applies even if your system is working perfectly
- Repairs or maintenance do not extend the life of compliance
After that date:
- Pre-June 2017 systems are considered non-compliant
- Installing parts in those systems is no longer compliant
This is a one-time replacement requirement for the unit itself—not your routine collection container change.
Think of this as your opportunity to update your system. We have a limited time deal to upgrade your 10+ year-old system for the same price as the replacement collection container.
Have the NXT Hg5 Amalgam Separator? You’re good to go. No change needed!
Why Act Now?
Over the past several months, we’ve already seen inspectors beginning to flag older systems and warn practices about the 2027 deadline.
Our goal is simple: Make sure you hear it from your manufacturer first—and have plenty of time to act on your terms.
The reality is:
- Waiting could mean limited availability
- Installation schedules will fill quickly
- Costs may increase as demand rises
By planning ahead, you stay in control.

Clearing Up Common Questions
“If it’s working, why replace it?”
Because the EPA rule is based on when it was installed—not how it performs.
“Does servicing extend the deadline?”
It doesn’t. Maintenance keeps your system running, but doesn’t reset compliance.
“Is this just a container change?”
No—this is a full unit replacement, separate from routine maintenance.
“What happens if I wait too long?”
You may run into scheduling, availability, or compliance issues as the deadline approaches.
“Is installation complicated?”
Not at all. The NXT Hg5 was designed as a simple swap onto your existing setup.
Final Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone
We’re here to:
- Keep you informed
- Help you plan ahead
- Make compliance as simple and manageable as possible
This deadline is coming either way—but with the right support, it doesn’t have to be stressful.

FAQ: EPA 2027 Amalgam Separator Deadline
It requires all separators installed before June 14, 2017 to be replaced by June 14, 2027. Here is the language and a link:
40 CFR § 441.30(a)(1)(iii): “A dental discharger subject to this part that operates an amalgam separator that was installed at a dental facility prior to June 14, 2017, satisfies the requirements of paragraphs (a)(1)(i) and (ii) of this section until the existing separator is replaced as described in paragraph (a)(1)(v) of this section or until June 14, 2027, whichever is sooner.”
(Source: EPA Dental Effluent Guidelines)
Most U.S. dental practices that discharge wastewater fall under this regulation. The deadline only applies to those with systems that were installed prior to June 14, 2017.
In most cases, yes. Compliance is based on wastewater discharge, not current use, because many patients still have existing amalgam restorations.
No. After the deadline, installing parts in pre-2017 systems is not compliant.
Check your installation date or contact your provider. If it was installed before June 14, 2017, it must be replaced.
The Solmetex NXT Hg5 is the direct replacement for legacy Hg5 systems.
Anytime before June 14, 2027—but earlier is typically easier and more predictable.
Yes—Solmetex offers a dedicated upgrade program designed to simplify the process and reduce overall cost.
